KALAMAZOO, MI -- Officials hope a state certification will show that Kalamazoo is primed and ready for new development.

Monday, the City Commission was presented an award for earning a Redevelopment Ready Communities certification, which recognizes efforts made to remove barriers and promote opportunities for prospective investors in the city. Kalamazoo joins 14 other Michigan communities that qualified by meeting best practice requirements outlined by the Michigan Economic Development Corporation.

Through the MEDC-sponsored program, local municipalities receive assistance in establishing a solid foundation to facilitate development, making them more attractive for investment. After the city applied in 2014, an MEDC evaluation found Kalamazoo met all but five of 43 best practices related to economic development.

Staff worked to create a marketing strategy, a public participation plan and implement the remaining best practices. City staff and a roughly 15-member task force comprised of community stakeholders developed strategies to show what sets Kalamazoo apart from other communities.

Representatives included members of Bronson Healthcare Group, the city's planning and economic development departments, Downtown Kalamazoo Incorporated, Kalamazoo College, Kalamazoo Valley Community College, Western Michigan University, Southwest Michigan First, local businesses and residents.
